Getting Started

How do I get started?
Create a free parent account at littleotterlearning.com/auth/signup, confirm your email, then sign in and add a child profile. Once a profile is set up, you can pick a story and start reading right away.
How do I add a child?
After signing in, go to your Dashboard and click “Add Child.” Enter your child’s first name, birth year (optional — used for age-appropriate placement), and starting reading level. You can adjust these at any time.
Can I add more than one child?
Yes. You can add as many child profiles as you need under a single parent account. Each child has their own reading history and progress.
What age range is Little Otter Reader designed for?
The app is designed for early readers ages 4–8, but any child working on foundational reading skills can benefit.
Do I need to be present while my child uses the app?
Yes — Little Otter Reader is designed to be used under adult supervision. Parents or caregivers should be nearby, especially when using microphone mode, to help guide the reading session.

Reading Modes

What are the two reading modes?
Microphone mode: Your child reads aloud and the app listens using your device's microphone. It follows along automatically and marks any missed or mispronounced words.

Manual mode: You control the session. Tap to start and stop, and manually mark any words your child missed. This is a great fallback if a microphone isn't available or speech recognition is struggling.
Can I switch modes between sessions?
Yes. You choose the reading mode at the start of each session, so you can use whichever works best that day.
Can I override what the app marked as a missed word?
Yes. You can always correct the results — tap any word to toggle it between correct and missed before saving the session.

Speech Recognition

How does microphone reading work?
Little Otter Reader uses your browser's built-in Web Speech API to listen to your child read. It compares what it hears to the story text and highlights any words that were missed or unclear. No audio is recorded or stored — it's processed in real time.
Which browsers support microphone mode?
Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge have the best support for the Web Speech API and are recommended. Firefox and Safari have limited or inconsistent support. If microphone mode isn't working, try Chrome.
The app isn't recognizing my child's words correctly. What should I try?
  • Make sure your browser has microphone permission for this site
  • Reduce background noise — a quiet room makes a big difference
  • Ask your child to speak clearly and at a steady pace
  • Try a different microphone or headset if available
  • Switch to manual mode if recognition continues to struggle — you can mark missed words yourself
How do I give the browser microphone permission?
When you start a session in microphone mode, your browser will ask for permission. Click “Allow.” If you accidentally clicked “Block,” go to your browser’s site settings for littleotterlearning.com and reset the microphone permission, then refresh the page.
Is my child's voice recorded or stored?
No. Audio is processed in real time for speech recognition and is never transmitted to or stored on our servers. Only the text transcript is retained briefly to calculate the accuracy score.

Progress & Dashboard

Where can I see my child's progress?
Go to Dashboard and select your child's profile. You'll see their reading history, accuracy scores, and skill level over time.
What does the accuracy score mean?
The accuracy score reflects the percentage of words your child read correctly in a session, shown on a 0–10 scale. A score of 8 means roughly 80% of words were read correctly.
How do I change my child's reading level?
From your Dashboard, select the child's profile and edit their settings. You can adjust the reading level (easy, medium, or hard) at any time.
How does the app decide which story to recommend next?
Stories are recommended in a progression based on your child's current reading level. As they complete stories, the app advances to the next one in the sequence.

Privacy & Data

Is my child's data safe?
Yes. Little Otter Reader is designed with children's privacy as a baseline requirement. We comply with COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) and applicable Canadian privacy laws. We never show ads, never sell data, and never share your child's information with third parties for commercial purposes. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Only what's necessary: your child's first name, birth year (optional), reading level, and reading session data (which story, how many words were read correctly, accuracy score). We do not collect last names, photos, addresses, or any other identifying information.
How do I delete my account and my child's data?
